CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I dropped by the kitchen to see Maria before we went out to see if she had any advice for us. She was standing by a counter, peeling vegetables.

“Hey,” I said. “We’re going to go down to the beach to look for shark teeth. Do you have any tips?”

Maria put down her peeler and turned around, lifting up a mug to take a sip first before she answered.

“That’s a great idea. Most people find that pretty fun. Okay, first, do you know how to get to the beach?”

I pointed in the rough direction of the ocean. “Follow the path?”

Maria grinned at me. “Exactly. If you’re lucky, you might even have tracks to follow.”

“Tracks?”

Maria took another sip from her big cup.

“Yeah. Richard and Wendy just went down there for a walk. She made him. She said he’s brooding too much.”

“He doesn’t really look like the type who enjoys long walks on the beach.”

“He doesn’t look like he does long walks anywhere,” Maria said with a gentle laugh. There hadn’t been much cause for amusement the last couple of days, so it was nice to see that she could still relax a little.

“Okay, and, umm, shark teeth? What do they look like? We don’t get many of those in Las Vegas.”

Maria laughed again, though with a hint of weariness.

“No, I don’t suppose you do. Okay, you’re probably not going to find any big ones. They’ll be pretty small, maybe up to a couple of inches if you get real lucky. They look kind of like triangles, with a point. And they’ll be black or gray, maybe even white. When you get down there, turn left and walk along the rockier part of the beach. You’ll want to look for the shark teeth at the wrack line.”

“Right. The wrack line. Got it.”

Maria lifted her eyebrows. “You don’t know what the wrack line is, do you?”

“No,” I admitted. “Is it the high tide mark?

“Nearly, but not quite. It’s the line of debris left by the tide. With the way the ocean is here, it’s a little bit below the high tide mark, but you’re not far off. You’ll see bits of seaweed and driftwood and stuff. Try to look amongst that or just in front of it for the teeth.”

“Fantastic. Thanks for the tips. They’re going to be useful for my articles when I write about this.”

“No problem. You all have fun down there.”

“We will.” I nodded at the work surface with its heap of freshly peeled carrots and potatoes. “Isn’t that Sofia’s job?”

“Yeah, but she’s on her own, so I help her out with some of the prep.”

“When do you ever rest?” I asked her. “You’re doing everything around here.”

Maria shrugged. “It’s good to keep busy, and it saves me from hiring someone. I like it. It’s meditative, peeling a whole mess of vegetables.” Maria shook her head quickly like she was shaking off a fly. “I’m going to take a bit of a breather, though.” She waved her coffee mug. “I think I need a top-up.
